Eggplant Functional Tester
- Eggplant simplifies test automation for Telvent Miner & Miner
Lack of need for software customization cited as a key benefit
- Telvent Miner & Miner's Quality Assurance team have been testing the ArcFM™ utility solution, a product suite that covers a full spectrum of utility tasks - everything from cost estimation to outage management. In the past, ArcFM's custom controls made it difficult and time-consuming to automate; but the QA team combed the industry to find a way to overcome these challenges.
Intrigued by the Eggplant demonstration movie on the Redstone Software website, they quickly realized that Eggplant was the only tool they had seen that could actually work right out of the box with no customization at all. When they tried it with ArcFM™ they were convinced: during a demonstration from Redstone, a TM&M tester was able to automate one of their login procedures within 15 minutes. TM&M were quoted as saying "We were floored...That was work that would have taken hours, or weeks with the other tools..."
- Eggplant ensures eGovernment works:
mgm technology partners realizes immediate benefits by using Eggplant
- For a public-to-citizen portal (eGovernment) with more than 70 million transactions per year, mgm technology partners needed to verify more than 30 client configurations on the front-end (GUI). Before Eggplant, manual tests were performed which grew to be time consuming, inefficient and tedious. A new approach was required...
The Eggplant solution helped mgm automate their GUI tests and, in turn, dramatically reduced their testing efforts. Specifically, Eggplant aided in the GUI testing of graphical elements with changing positions. The impact was immediate and dramatic. Each test execution was reduced from several days of manual testing effort to the start of an overnight test run, the verification of the test results the next day and the repetition of the few failed tests where problems were identified. The time spent on a test cycle was reduced by a factor of about 3-5.
- Eggplant improves testing consistency for a large electricity utility:
Eggplant exceeds
expectations
- A large Southwestern electric utility, serving approximately 1 million customers, needed to automate their testing environment to improve consistency of their testing and eliminate human error. Cost reduction and operational improvements were a must.
Having looked at other tools such as IBM's Rational Robot and having found them useless to test their Citrix-based virtual desktop environment, they turned to Eggplant. Eggplant enabled the company to test their Citrix virtual desktop environment automatically. This had an immediate and dramatic effect on testing time that went from 1 day when performed manually to less than 1 hour when performed by Eggplant.
- Eggplant reduces Westinghouse's required test time:
Westinghouse Electric reduces 40 manual
hours of testing into an overnight run
- At Westinghouse, testing happens at the end of a development cycle. As deadlines loom, finding an issue during the final system testing, resulted in a lot of pressure on development resources and re-testing efforts.
Westinghouse needed to be able to automate the manual process at the end of the development cycle, while reducing total time and error for testing in the critical path.
In November 2006, Westinghouse began using Eggplant to automate their Motif GUI. Soon, they started catching glitches that would normally take a few weeks to find, on a nightly automated basis. No other solution that they had tried before offered them the ease of use, flexibility or power of Eggplant. It was immediately apparent to Westinghouse that Redstone's Eggplant software addressed their business challenges thereby reducing errors and saving time, manpower and money.
- Eggplant increases Cisco's automated testing coverage:
Eggplant becomes a cornerstone of Cisco's overall quality assurance strategy
- Cisco, working in collaboration with Adobe (formerly Macromedia), designed, developed and delivered a Flash based version of its MeetingPlace software. Cisco's existing tool, SilkTest, was not able to work with the newly implemented Breeze Flash Player and Macromedia was not willing to expose the underlying Flash application code or develop special hooks into objects to allow these tools. The inability of SilkTest to interact with the MeetingPlace application in this way meant that Cisco did not have a solution to automate testing of MeetingPlace.
Cisco's first challenge was to find a solution that would test the new Flash based MeetingPlace user interface improving testing coverage while cutting costs and integrating with existing testing tool suites. They also faced another challenge in finding a way to detect video endpoints in a conference. This was driven by a need to ensure an image is accurately displayed from the users perspective to ensure a quality experience. This was seen as a requirement in terms of providing true automation testing coverage.
“Eggplant has proven to have increased our automation test coverage beyond just the initial requirements. We have gone into using it for simple Video continuity testing during a multi-point video web conference as well as opening up new avenues in automating our install process with additional test equipment.“ - Keith Richards, UCBU Test Manager
- Automated Testing Helps Develop Better Software Solutions:
Senior project manager estimates ROI of as much as 50% of testing resources
- “With Eggplant, all you need to do is think about the way you would work as a user,” says the senior project manager for a company that develops business solution software applications. Like many companies, their success depends on giving their customers thoroughly-tested solutions that are easy to use, reliable, and effective.
“Our software is far better and our customers are much happier. Eggplant is a fundamental part of that,” says the senior project manager. The division has standardized on Eggplant as their automated test tool.
- Eggplant Reduces Test Time by 80% for Gresham Enterprise Storage:
Full Return on Investment in Just One Month
- Applying Eggplant transformed Gresham's testing operations. In its first full test cycle, Eggplant reduced testing time by approximately 80 percent, equivalent to 42 man-weeks efficiency improvement over the course of a year. That boost in efficiency also results in rapid return on investment.
“Even taking into account initial set up time and the cost of the software, Eggplant delivered full return on investment within one month!” said Wright. “Eggplant has reduced two-week testing cycles down to just three days.”
- Software Validation for Corporate Operating System Upgrade:
Eggplant Facilitates Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X Migration
- Recently a Fortune 500 company needed to test 70 software applications to ensure compatibility with its planned Mac OS X deployment across hundreds of workstations and laptop computers. The company's current testing platform was unable to test Macintosh applications and the rollout deadline was approaching fast.
Manually testing the many different combinations of these applications would have taken too long. The company turned to Eggplant and CG Principals to make it happen. CG Principals, an Eggplant solutions provider, was called in to streamline and fortify the company's test development process. Eggplant was used to conduct automated configuration and integration testing among applications in a controlled test environment.
As a result, serious issues were detected that would have impeded the rollout. The company is now in a position to quickly test new software upgrades against the current installation and get fast, reliable results.
- Corel Builds Keyword-Driven Testing Framework Using Eggplant:
Simplifies Testing of Cross-Platform Applications
- “Using Eggplant, we were able to build a full keyword-driven testing framework for one of our core products, Corel Painter IX. Eggplant is a powerful and versatile tool that makes it simple for developers to write tests that easily interact with any portion of Painter, even if those developers have minimal knowledge of Eggplant or the scripting language SenseTalk. In addition, once written, the scripts will work on multiple operating systems.”
“Eggplant's SenseTalk language allowed us to write the core code of the system and effectively manage all of our controls at a very abstract level. This makes the framework very easy to port to multiple operating systems and languages while reducing the time required for maintenance. The Redstone team seems very committed to their product. They were highly responsive to our needs, answering our questions quickly and accurately.”

- Eggplant Solution Performs BIOS-level Testing:
VNC-based KVM Switch Enables BIOS Access
- An advanced technology company developing PCI (peripheral component interconnect) cards for Windows® and Linux based systems used Eggplant to automate the testing of peripherals at the BIOS level, before the operating system was loaded. They were also able to create scripts to verify the peripheral was installed correctly after the OS was loaded, test for system integrity, and then test the GUI.
The fact that the operating system had not yet been loaded presented the major challenge -- no tool that runs locally on the machine being tested would have worked. The only solution was to use Eggplant and an IP-based KVM switch from Adderlink. Using the KVM switch, which includes a VNC server, Eggplant was able to connect to and drive the interface of the test machine while booted into the BIOS.
This solution would allow automated testing of any peripheral desired, including printers, storage devices, and disk drives.

- Eggplant improves Ericsson's testing accuracy and efficiency:
Ericsson finds easier, more reliable
load testing with Eggplant
- Ericsson's commitment to innovation creates a special challenge for their product verification departments; testing has to be a smooth and reliable process when there is always new functionality on the horizon.
Ericsson had been automating their OSS-RC load testing with a leading load-testing tool, but they were encountering some significant difficulties: When bugs turned up, they were often found to be side effects of the testing process, and not a true reflection of the SUT.
Sr. Test Engineer Sven Becker discovered Eggplant from Redstone Software. He saw that Eggplant could not only accommodate their Solaris and Citrix systems testing requirements but that Eggplant scripts were easier to write than scripts in their existing tool and that they performed more reliably. More so, Eggplant presented both immediate and long-term financial advantages for Ericsson. The choice was clear...
